Hi Hanna!

Sorry for the delay in replying. I've been to Vegas and then northeaster Washington for the last two weeks, only touching down for a couple of days in between. Now I'm home until the end of the month, then to Orlando for a couple of days. Are you going to Orlando this year for RWA Nationals? How have you been? Did you get your last manuscript off to your editor without a problem?

Thanks for you patience on this forum business. I'm ready to start talking about whatever you'd like now. I'll tap Jacquie and make sure she checks in soon, too.

Looking forward to chatting!
Ann

We've written the book, but there's more to it than that. When we get published, we need people to READ it! What can we do to get people to LOVE us, and want to run out and buy our books!

I asked Author, Libby Sternberg, what do you think about writing blogs?

"Readers now expect authors to have websites, but many authors also maintain blogs. Are blogs worth the time and effort? Do they help authors attract readers?

Jennifer,
It's like exposing your soul. No matter how many books, stories, articles one writes and publishes it still takes a degree of effort to push the send button. Dana is quite correct.

I know I speak for myself, but I have the fear of hitting the send button. I spend sleepless nights, reading my first three chapter and synopsis over and over. It feels like hundreds of time. I hit the send button. Then a see a typo. Crap...

I asked author, Dana Marie Bell

How do you get over the fear of hitting the send button?

"People who don’t write have no idea how hard hitting that “Send” button can be. Here you are. Your novel is complete. You’ve written your query, polished your novel until it glows in the dark, the dreaded synopsis is sitting on your hard drive… and you still can’t bring yourself to do it. I should know. Not too long ago I sent out my first query to an agent. I haven’t heard anything back yet; it’s way too soon, but hitting that Send button is still, even after three years, nine ebooks and four print books, a difficult thing to do. “Just do it!” seems to be the general consensus of those who don’t write. “What’s the worst that can happen?”

Judith,

Wow! You have a great yearly plan. Lots of exciting advances in your career and writing. I loved being a small part of RCWR this last year and I need to remember it next year to see if I can go. It was a lot of fun to hang out with the Rose City Writers. I look forward to seeing your name on various workshop venues as the year progresses.

It's going to be fun to see some of you guys at ECWC this year. I am very excited to go to conference and see old and new friends, like you. I'll be waiting to hear what happens with Sourcebooks.

Did you make some new contacts at the Wenatchee Writers conference? More people to spread the word about your blog?

Thanks for all of your class participation! You were a great student, and very good about interacting with others in the class. It was a joy to have you in the class. Thanks, also, for filling out the evaluation!

I wish you great accomplishments and successes in your writing career!

Lesson Five - Part Two
May - finish polishing series concept and all seven synopses and start on review/edit of Book One; create career plan.
June - Complete review edit of Book One; complete review/edit of Book Three, rewrite Book Two.
July (between 07/01 and 07/06) submit to Sourcebooks; write three articles based on the three workshops I've created.

I think the rest of the year is more specific than these first couple of months because my focus is on getting the submission request in shape and sent off as well as keeping things going with my blog, website updates, facebook, etc.

Another option to spending lots of time to build/create your own workshop is to pay someone to do it for you. For me that saved me hours of writing time and lots of frustration. It's been well worth it to have someone else do that part of it for me. And, Katie was and is easy to work with and I thought reasonably priced. You can check out 'our work' at http://www.judithashleyromance.com.

I've spent some time thinking this assignment over as I'm recovering from my wasp sting.

Lesson Three had six main catagories: Technical skills, Critique Group/writing partners, Name Recognition, Blog, Workshops/articles, website.

Lesson Four I targeted Technical Skills and Blog for the Six Hat exercise.

In this Lesson I initially wrote out my monthly goals on the line but then realized that a different organization would work better for me.

Daily: write and/or read
Weekly: blog, facebook, writing partners, Tami
Monthly: up-date website, critique group, write next month's blogs

Specifically I've targeted the remainder of May and June to bring my Sourcebooks submission up-to-snuff so I can submit July 1.

In July my goal is to write the three articles based on my three workshops and to check out where/how to submit them to ????

August I'll order the RWA National CD set as I've decided to stop stressing over going and just come home instead.

September I've nothing specific planned other than what is above. It is possible that if Sourcebooks likes my submission I'll hear back from them by then and will have work to do from their point of view...and I'll be searching for an agent. This will be a good time to work on the Glasser Concept website and look into a blog.

October - ECWC and presenting workshop, volunteering in various ways, connecting with writer friends.

November - NANO and starting Book Four of my series.

December - I've submitted ideas for workshops to RCRW and have been told okay for a 2011 date. If I've not heard from Program Chair by December, I'll check in and see what's going on.

January - Hopefully I'm up to my ears in edits/rewrites/etc. for Sourcebooks and finishing Book Four.

February - If RCRW has another Winter Intensive, I'll attend. And maybe be able to plan on the monthly meetings as a regular event.

March - By this time I plan to have my Glasser Concepts website and blog going and connecting the two groups through me.

April - I am easily and effortlessly blogging weekly and perhaps visiting other blogs, updating website monthly, staying focused on my writing, submitting workshops and articles to newsletters and conference planners.

Tami,

FYI: I am definitely camera shy but talked to a publicist at Desert Dreams about 'enhancing' a photo. She does an excellent job and if I lived there I'd already have an appointment with her. Also, she matches your 'look' with the types of books you write and she posts your picture and a brief bio on her website in exchange for your giving her credit for your photo on yours. A real win-win ... am considering using my Alaska FFM and heading back to Scottsdale and using her although I'm sure there is someone in the area who can do the photo work...what I really liked was her website pages devoted to writers.

Now, on to lesson five.

Alice, I hope you feel better now.

About that blog, don't forget to promote it. No one will come read it if they don't know it's there. And remember, you can always announce your blog posts here at the Forum in the Bragging Roost.

It's been great having you in class, and I hope you have a boatload of sales in the future. <img src="http://www.1stturningpoint.com/1stturningpoint/forum/bb-plugins/bb-smilies/default/icon_smile.gif" title=":)" class="bb_smilies" />

Howdy,

I just wanted to say excellent job for jumping in their with your new website and with your goals. I'm more of a general timeline than a month by month check off, so well done.

For your planning purposes, the ECWC will be near the end of October in 2011, either the second to last, or last weekend. I can't remember, it's already shaping up to be bigger and more fantastic than this year.

Good luck to you.
Anna Alexander

So sorry I haven't been on here since posting. I've been sick for the past week so I have failed to reply to anyone!

Jacquie: I plan to post at least twice a week, about 8-10 times a month for my regular blog. For the new "romance" blog that I will be starting soon (thanks to all of you!) Will start with once a week. If I can do more then I will but at least once a week.

To Norman-thanks!

Ann, thanks for all your advice. You and Jacquie have been great! A critique partner sounds great. I will look into that. Maybe some of the other writers from the "Erotica" collection I'm working on with will be interested in critiquing non-erotica stories.

Tamera,

I like how you've integrated the magazine article part of your platform within your yearly goals. This will allow you to continue building product (books) while also building name recognition. I'm excited to watch your career grow. Someday when I make it up to an Alaska conference, I hope to meet up with you. Until then, if you feel like checking out a great conference in 2011, Emerald City Writer's Conference is in October and is stellar. There are usually around 250 writers and lots of great agents and editors. Plus, Judith and Jacquie and I (Anna and Cassie, too) would get to meet you in person.

Thanks for being such a wonderful student in class and partaking in so many discussions. I'm very glad to have "met" you.

Thanks also for the great class evaluation answers. We really appreciate your help!
